Ralph vs Piggy

The first characters we met in chapter one of Lord of the Flies are Ralph and Piggy.  They appear to be foils, or opposites, of one another.  Ralph is handsome, athletic, somewhat reserved, and the son of a Royal Navy commander.  He is enchanted by the physical aspects of the island, perhaps a reflection of never having been to a beach before.  Piggy, on the other hand, is heavy, asmatic, wears glasses, and lives with his auntie.  He offers Ralph friendship, and is concerned with finding the others and with the details of how they will survive.  Ralph only tolerates Piggy's friendly overtures-and immediately betrays him by ignoring his plea to keep his nickname, Piggy, a secret from the others.

Your question is, would either or both be your friend?  Why?

  1. I believe I would befriend both individuals, because an enemy isn't the best thing to have in such a secluded area, when the most likely is that you would both rely on eachother for survival. When you're stranded, there's only so many things one could do for themselves, and like one of the guidelines for a stable civilization there must be division of labor. In other words, this would be a "I'll-scratch-your-back-you-scartch-mine" scenario. You would need as many alliances as possible, for your own well-being and sanity.♥(:

  2. I think they can both be my friends espcially piggy because I can relate to him. Ralph also can be my friend; I have firends that act the same as he does.

  3. I probably would befriend both of them but mostly Ralph. I would befriend piggy almost as much but I would accidently call him names and make fun of him. In the story Ralph seems to be like the cool guy but I feel bad for piggy because everyone pretty much hates him. I would befriend Ralph 95% and piggy 90%. I would be Ralphs friend for his coolness and piggys friend for his niceness.

  4. I would pick Piggy to be my friend, he's a lot more friendly and understandable then Ralph. I would hate to be stuck with someone who isn't on the same page as I am. Especially since they are stuck on an island; where they might not be found. Knowing Piggy is willing to cooperate with Ralph to find the others, truely shows how well he will survive.

  5. It would be for the better if you befriended both of them. Why? You're stranded on a island with very few people. It is best to build a strong foundation between your comrades in a stranded island than to go at it alone and risk them taking your items of importance. Even if one is selfish or the other is extremely shy, we need to all get along. Another plus is for you not to go insane, you've got company with you...

  6. Since were stranded on an island i would be friends with both of them because if it ever came down to voting one off the island i hope it wouldnt be me. I would get along with Ralph more because hes atheletic and somewhat reserved rather than being big and annoying the way piggy is.

  7. I would choose both of them to be my friends. I would like to have Piggy as a friend because he and I both wear glasses. I would like to have Ralph as a friend because he seems that he is a guy that probably likes football, and I do too.

  8. I would more than likely choose both of them to be my friends. The reasons I would have Piggy as my friend is because he comes off as the cautious type and it would be nice to have someone that doesnt want to be doing stupid stuff all the time. I would like to have Ralph as a friend because it seems like me and him would get along more than myself and Piggy. I think Ralph would be the smarter one in the group and would take charge instead of FAT Piggy.

  9. Piggy if anything would be my frind, only because we can realte, he wants to stay in contact with all the kids. He wants to make sure everyone is together and fine. Ralph on the other hand is taunting piggy aboiut his name and worried more about himself then the other children on the island. To be stuck on an island with individuals they dont work together isn't going to work very well. When I am friends with piggy we will more then likly survive longer rather then me and Ralph, because there has to be a divison of labor and with Ralph he will be more worried about himself rather then all of the kids. For piggy he cares for everyone equally therefor we will all work as a team.

  10. If I were stuck in an island with Piggy and Ralph i would most likely be friends with both of them. In a way i can be like Ralph, wanting to explore the island. I am also somewhat like Piggy because i like to be very friendly with others and i am a very cautious person. I dont like to pick sides with friends so i would probably find a way to stay in the middle.

  11. I believe I would be friends with both Piggy and Ralph. Being stranded on an island with many different people, I surely wouldn't want to take sides, and make things on the island, more difficult. Ralph, obviously is the more confident of the two so, therefore he would be tough to get along with, he would be someone I would want to listen to, also he would be a strong leader in the group. Piggy is the weaker of the two, but most likely the easiest to get along with, and converse with. I think it would be better to befriend them both and have a good combination of personalities like them.

  12. I would try to befriend both of them because I would probably want someone to talk to after something like that happened, but Piggy looks like he would annoy me after a while so I would probably become closer to Ralph instead of Piggy. I would still have a good relationship with Piggy though because when your stuck on an island with people you will want more friends then enemies.

  13. I would choose to be Piggy's friend. Piggy seems more nice than Ralph, and I don't think I would get along with Ralph because he seems like the kind of that thinks he's better than everbody elsa. Piggy, is the guy that seems like he is much more kind.

  14. I would be both of their friends, because why do I want to make enemys with anyone. Making enemys with either of these characters would be a disadvantage for me. I would choose piggy as a friend, because he sounds helpful in many ways and I would also choose Ralph as a friend, because he sounds like a cool guy to hang out with.

  15. If I was in that situation, I would befriend Piggy because he seems to know what he's doing and from what I have read, he appears like a very nice guy. While Ralf is rather mean because he betrays Piggy by telling the others his old nickname which Piggy did not want to be called. I would not want to become Ralph's enemy though. :)

  16. I would choose to befriend Piggy. I think that Ralph is selfish and much more different then I am, and I would not trust him. Piggy, I think, needs more help or someone there to support him. Ralph is more independent. So I would befreind Piggy.

  17. I would probably befriend both of them but for different reasons. I like how piggy is very friendly and outgoing which is how I am towards most people. I don't think there would be much conflict between the two of us. As for Ralph he seems completlely opposite from piggy so I would be his friend because I know we would be able to have serious conversations, but that is about it. We don't have that much in common.

    ReplyDelete
  18. I would choose to be friends with Piggy. He just seems so much more understanding than Ralph. Being stuck on an island,I would hate to be stuck with Ralph because he is snobby and mean towards Piggy.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Well, to be honest, I don't think I would befriend either one. At least not to the point of being best friends. Piggy, while seemingly fair, seems to possess this expendable quality about him. I like him, but I have a bad feeling about what will happen to him later on as the story. As for Raplh, his position as leader leaves him wiht some heavy choices, and Jack's arrival semed to have triggered some kind of plan that will unlitmelty leave Raplh in a bad position.

  20. I would choose to be freinds with both of them, so that when they got hungary and needed somebody to sacrifice, they would not sacraficie me because I am their friends. I would also chose to be friends with both of them, so that if I was in trouble they would help me.

  22. I Would Be Both Of Their Friends, But I would Mostly Get More Along With Ralph, Because We Have The Same Aspects And I Would Be A Leader If I Was In That Situatuion. I Would Really Not Be Piggy's Friend Because He Seems To Immature For The Situation He's In.

  23. I honestly think that if i would of gotten lost in an island, i jwould of tried my best to get out alone and find my own way out of it. I wouldn't be friends with either one of them Ralph or piggy. Ralph is one of those guys who can care less about anyone he only cares of himself. And piggy can be the nice guy but also can back stabb u, so i wouldent of trust noone i would of been lost only me myslef and GOD

    ReplyDelete
  24. I would be both their friend's. Piggy shows cocern for other people and just not himself. He seems to be a nice person and someone who wouldn't betray you. Ralph on the other hand is a strong leader. He'll do anything that will get him what he wants.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I believe that I would rather befriend Piggy more, rather than Ralph. I would like to befriend both of them, don't get me wrong, but i think me and Piggy would get along better. He's more nice, and understanding. I would get along with someone better who wouldn't turn their back on me.

  26. To befriend one or both, I don't really know. Maybe if I had no other option I would be friends with both of them. I know I would be very nice to Piggy, but not Ralph. I don't really like Ralph's attitude and personality. Just because Ralph is annoyed by Piggy doesn't mean he has to be rude. Piggy seems like someone nice and caring so of course I would be friendly to him. Either way I would try my best to befriend Ralph more.

  27. I think I would have to befriend both of the two, reason being we are stranded on a desert island and need to have strong relationships in order to work as a team and survive together!

  28. I would choose Piggy because Ralph was being a jerk. If he did it to Piggy whats to stop him from doing the same to me. Thats the logic i based my choice on.

  29. I would prefer Ralph to be my bestfriend in this situation only because he seems like a better leader. He also seems very confident in everything he does. I would choose piggy because he seems very cautious at some times. He also seems to bring up his auntie and what he used to do back home. So ill rather pick Ralph.

  30. If I were to be stranded in a island I would try to get as many friends that I could. Ralph would seem like a very intresting friend to have hes outgoing and personally someone I could get along with. Piggy on the other hand is more calm and sticks by the rules and by what he is told by his elders. Both of them im pretty sure I would get along with and I would prefer both to be my friend.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I personally would be friends with both Piggy and Ralph. They both have good qualities that could help us. Ralph is strong and seemes unafraid of anything. Piggy is nice and he just goes along with Ralph. Though he can be afraid to do things sometimes, if I were in that situation with them, I wouldn't leave Piggy behind. I could never do that, and I wouldn't want any enemies on the island. I would want all the help i could get.

    ReplyDelete
  32. i wouldn't befriend Ralph because obviously, he's the type of person whom can't be trusted. I like my friends to be reliable when a problem seems to come up. In the other hand, he has good qualities that prove him fearless and ready for anything. I don't think I would befriend Piggy either, because he isn't impulsive or sure of himself.

  33. Knowing the situation that we might be stranded on an island for who knows how long, I would probably choose to be friends with as much people as possible. More people means more help for finding ways to survive. Ralph thinks more of himself than of others, so I'd choose Piggy as a better friend than Ralph. Mostly knowing that he still has my trust.

    ReplyDelete
  34. I would probably choose both of them as my friends only because i think it would be funny to see ralph and piggy argueing. Also i would have ralph to play sports with because we are both athletic, and I would like to pick on piggy to stay entertained.

  36. I would be friends with both piggy and ralph, just for the simple fact that I'm a friendly person. I also agree with Daniela on the "I-Scratch-Your-Back-You-Scratch-mine" idea so that's another reason why I'd be both their friends. I'd probably be more of a neutral person though, not favoring either one over the other.

  37. I would probably be friends with both of them. For the simple fact that if I were stranded in an island I would want as much people to be around with because I don't want to go crazy. But I would be more closer to Ralph and not to Piggy. Piggy is more shy, and I'm not shy, well sometimes i can be but not all the time. Ralph is the leader type and athletic, I always have more in common with someone that is athletic. But they are both on my friends list.

  38. I would be friends with Piggy instead of Ralph. I would not pick Ralph to be my friend because he will end up betraying me. Piggy on the other hand will be a loyal friend and is concerned about finding people and surviving.

  39. If this was my real life I'd chose Piggy to be my friend, but if I were stranded on an island I'd choose both Piggy and Ralph to be my friends, because I wouldn't want any enemies. Both of them have good qualities. Piggy is friendly, and Ralph is more of a leader type. Although, I wouldn't tell Ralph things I didn't want the others knowing.

  40. If I was stranded on a island with Piggy and Ralph I would be friends with both of them.Ralph may seem like the mean guy but, I would be friends with him so he can keep me alive.Piggy seems like if he can be fun to be with and I won't have to be bored.

    ReplyDelete
  41. I would be friends with Piggy. Unlike Ralph, Piggy isn't mean and he's trustworthy. To be stuck on an island, I would rely more on Piggy for help and finding other people.

    ReplyDelete
  42. I believe both of them should be my friends, for the simple fact that you would be stranded i an island where there's basically no one but just these 2 guys and I. No mattering how they are in personality, it still believe, for two is better than one- if one falls, the other one is there to help him up. Ans well with two more friends, it makes it even better...

    ReplyDelete
  43. I would choose to be friends with both Piggy and Ralph. To me, I really wouldn't care if one of them was nicer or meaner, or whatever the case may be. When it all comes down to it, i would rather rely on two people instead of having just one person to rely on for help and survival skills.

    ReplyDelete
  44. I would be friends with both of them because it would be bad if you weren't friends with one of them and they found a lot of food, but wouldn't let you have any because they weren't your friend. I would be a little bit more friendly with Piggy because he has a funny name.

    ReplyDelete
  45. I think I would want to be friends with them both because it is better to be friends with them then to have an enemy when you are stranded on an island.

    ReplyDelete
  46. i think i would be friends with both because i would want to have company and not be by myself...i would probably need all the help i can get to find food and shelter.

  47. Because we’re stranded on an island, I think I would be friends with both. Even though Ralph doesn’t sound like much of a helpful friend, I would accept all the company I could get. Piggy sounds like he would do most of the entertaining. I think it would be way easier to find food, shelter, and water with the three of us helping. After all, three heads are better than one.

  48. i would probably try to be friends with both Piggy and Ralph because if i were stranded on an island then i wouldn't want to be alone i would want to have as many people with me as possible.

  49. To be honest , I think I would befriend both of them. Piggy because he is really outgoing, knows how to have fun and make the best out of a situation. Being stuck on an island with him would calm me down a little. Ralph is the type to take things more serious and who knows how to take charge, especially in a situation like this. They would both be helpful and understanding with me which would really help all of us stuck on the island.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Honestly, I think I would befriend both Piggy and Ralph. Mainly bacause it's better to have more allies than enimes.Piggy seems like he's a real sweetie, but if I was stuck with him on an island for who knows how long I would most likely become aggrivated with him. Ralph on the other hand would aggrivate me from the very beginning. If he betrayed Piggy, why wouldn't he do the same to me?

    ReplyDelete
  51. I would try to become friends with both Ralph and Piggy. If I was stranded on an island it would not be wise to make enemy first off. Secondly, I would become friends with piggy because it is good to have someone who is intelligent, while i would also like to be friends with Ralph, because it would be smart to have a friend who is athletic and can possibly hunt for food.

    ReplyDelete
  52. I would choose to befriend both Ralph and Piggy. I would like to be friends with Ralph because he seems much like a leader, and I would want a friend like that if I were stuck on an island. I would also be friends with Piggy because he was very concerned with finding others and surviving.

    ReplyDelete
  53. I would choose to be friends with both of the charrachters, because creating enemies on a secluded island can result in terror. I don't believe i would be up with piggy, however. He's to cautios for my liking. Ralph seems more of the kind of guy i'd like to become pretty close too.

    ReplyDelete
  54. I would befriend both characters because they both have special qualities in the situation in which they are in. Ralph is strong and independent, he would be a good companion to have around for survival purposes. Piggy is gentle and generous, he would be a good companion to have around to just have a nice talk and not end up going insane. I also agree with Dani and Seth on the "i-scratch-your-back-you-scratch-mine," because when you are on a deserted island, anything can happen, and you would like to have as much people on your side to help you out with anything.

    ReplyDelete
  55. I would choose both Ralph and Piggy to be my friends. Ralph seemed to take charge of the situation and that's something that I would do too. I would like Piggy as a friend too beacuase he was very careful and kind.

    ReplyDelete
  56. I would choose to be both Piggy and Ralph's friend, and I also agree with Adrian Garcia in saying to befriend both of them not making enemies. Making enemies with people would only harm you, especially with the fact that you would be stuck on an island with them.

    ReplyDelete
  57. I would choose to be Ralph's friend, because Ralph seems to be the natural leader. Piggy on the other hand seems only to be a follower. I would be the friend of the leader, while also being Piggy's acquaintance. Being friends with the leader does have its benefits.

    ReplyDelete
  58. Me personally i would befriend both of them reason being that we are trapped out there with no entertainment you need something to keep you from being completly shut out from the world. I would like to be friends with Ralph because he seems to be more out there and well, more like me, at the same time i would enjoy being Piggy's friend because he seems more caring and trustworthy. I think it would benefit me by being both of their friends because they both can come in handy in different situations. Ralph seems to be very straight forward and serious that would be something I would need because I tend to get sidetracked, but piggy is friendly and more laid back I would need that as well because I stress out over the simplest of things.

    ReplyDelete
  59. Honestly, I would be friends with the both of them. When you are stranded on an island with people you don't even know, I'm pretty sure you would want to befriend with everyone, so you can have more chance of survival and less of betrayal. However, out of Ralph and Piggy, I think I would be closer to Ralph, just because he seems more conscious about the situation and how things should be done. On the other hand, Piggy seems more friendly, which I need during the situation, also.

    ReplyDelete
  60. That's a good question but I honestly would be Piggy's friend. He seems to have good character and he would make the siuation that we are in better than what it really is. However,I wouldn't want to have Ralph as an enemy. I would be friends with Ralph but closer to Piggy. Enemies wouldn't be a smart thing to have when your stranded on an island.

    ReplyDelete
  61. I would probably be friends with both Ralph and Piggy, just because i wouldn't want to be to myself when im stranded on an island. At this point having friends is a plus, theres no need to make enemies. Out of both i would most likely be closer to Piggy, he's FRIENDly and is more concerned about their situation. Ralph on the other hand is stong, he would be a good companion for survival purposes. Any how having 2 friends while your stranded on an island would probably make things very interesting.

    ReplyDelete
  62. I would want to be friends with piggy because of the type of person he is and also because of hie personality. Piggy is the type of friend you would want to keep close and can always trust. However, i would also like to have Ralph as a friend but he wouldnt be a close friend like piggy.

    ReplyDelete
  63. Piggy seems to...much like a liability. I would rather be friends with someone that is stable, knows how to take care of himself. I understand how ralph is a...survival of the fittest kind of guy and seems to only care about his own life. Heck that's pretty much how I'd be as well.

    ReplyDelete
  64. i would want to be friends with piggy. the reason is piggy seems like he actually wants to get off, so he can help you find all the water, food, and a way off. ralph seems to care only about exploring the island, and not worring about getting off

    ReplyDelete
  65. I think I would befriend both, Ralf and Piggy. Like many other classmates above me I agree that it wouldn't be the best choice to have enimies, considering the circumstances. If we were not on the island, then I think I would still befriend both of them.

    ReplyDelete
  66. I would want to be friends with both of them because you wouldnt want enemies while on an island. You never know what theyll do to you. Who would want to have no friends while stranded on an island anyways? :]

    ReplyDelete
  67. i would probably be friends with Ralph, because i think me and him probably have more in common then i do with piggy . Ralph is kind of a jerk and i like to take charge and i don't really listen to logic.

  68. I would be both of their friends because if I were stuck in an island I would want all the help I can get. I wouldn't be a best friend to any of them but I wouldn't be too apart. Both of them could come in handy in such a situation.

    ReplyDelete
  69. I would be friends with Piggy because he is clearly the smartest of all the kids stranded on the island. Ralph has too much on his mind being the leader, which is why I would avoid him. Piggy is "plump", has asthma, and is very dependent on his glasses, which makes him vulnerable. Because fat people need a helping hand sometimes, I chose to be Piggy's friend to aid him during these difficult times.

    ReplyDelete
  70. IF i knew piggy and Ralph i would probably be friends with both of them. Piggy seem to be smart and want to find a way out so being with him would be a good way to get out alive. Then Ralph seems to be a leader and determined to get out but he is not as serious about getting out like Piggy.

    ReplyDelete
  71. If I had to choose to be friends with Piggy and Ralph, I would be friends with both of them because it is not good to have enemies when you are stranded on an island. I think it would also be important because one might have a skill that can help us all to survive.

  72. If i had to choose to be friends with Ralph and Piggy, I would choose Piggy because he is one who seems to really care about the importance of surviving and getting off the island . While Ralph just seems to deal with piggy, piggy is trying to befriend everybody.
